2016 Local Government Elections

The number of seats in the Ngwathe Local Municipality reduced to 36 seats in the 2016 Local Government elections. There were 67,887 registered voters in the local municipality for the 2016 local government elections. The highest voter turn-out was achieved in Ward 12 with 68.65 %. The lowest voter turn-out in the municipality was in Ward 3 with 50.13 %. The voter turn-out achieved in the 2016 municipal elections was 58.73 %.

 

Following the 2016 local government elections, the African National Congress was returned as the majority party with 24 seats. The Democratic Alliance holds 8 seats whilst the Economic Freedom Fighters holds 3 seats and the Freedom Front Plus holds 1 seat in the Council.

2011 Local Government Elections

The Ngwathe Local Municipality has 39 seats. The voters roll of the municipality comprised of 64,316 registered voters in the 2011 local government elections. The highest voter turn-out was achieved in Ward 14 with 66.10 %. The lowest voter turn-out in the municipality was in Ward 5 with 47.81 %. The average voter turn-out achieved in the 2011 municipal elections was 58.49 %.

Following the 2011 municipal elections, four political parties are represented in the municipality. The African National Congress was returned as the majority party with 28 seats. The Democratic Alliance holds 9 seats and the Freedom Front Plus and Congress of the People obtained one seat each.
